Utah’s new Mayflower Mountain Resort, a year-round mountain village adjacent to Deer Valley Resort in Park City, will become the third ski-only area in Utah, and the first ski resort in decades with an overarching comprehensive plan and design.

Utah Leads The Way In Ski Resort Innovation

BY DEER VALLEY

Leading the way in ski resort innovation, Mayflower Mountain Resort will be built from the ground up by Extell Development Company over the next 20 years. The comprehensive plan includes everything from retail, lodging, employee housing, parking, restaurants, and more.

Luckily skiers won’t have to wait two decades to hit the slopes, as the village is planning a soft opening this upcoming 2024-2025 season.

What makes Mayflower unique is the fact that the overall vision allows for its thoughtfully planned design to be as efficient as possible. Where other ski resorts have been patch-worked together over time, Mayflower's phased construction means terrain can be serviced by fewer lifts and the village can meet the goal of being very pedestrian-friendly.

It will also have the most sophisticated snowmaking system in North America. The emerging alpine village has been met with some criticism that the primarily north-facing slopes don't lend to snow accumulation. However, the resort has acquired water rights and plans to do a lot of snowmaking. An estimated 80% of water for snowmaking will return to the Jordanelle Reservoir annually.

The Vision For Mayflower Mountain Resort

On its own, Mayflower would have been impressive and sure to be a big draw in Utah's bid to host another Winter Olympics. Featuring:

  • 4,300 skiable acres
  • 3,200 feet of vertical drop
  • 130 runs
  • 17 lifts
  • 9 hotels
  • 4 restaurants
  • A ski school & learning center
  • An ice skating rink
  • The largest ski beach in North America
  • 11 miles of trails for hiking and biking in the summer

But after 5 years of negotiations, Deer Valley and Extell have reached an agreement and announced that Deer Valley will be operating the formerly Mayflower Resort. Going forward, the expansion project will be known as Deer Valley East Village.

This long-anticipated expansion will allow Deer Valley guests to access terrain in both areas while skipping the congested traffic to Park City.

Deer Valley East Village will also give Deer Valley's bragging rights a mega-boost. The world-class ski resort will go from boasting 2,026 skiable acres to 5,726 skiable acres, making it the third largest ski resort in North America. The total number of runs will grow to 238 from 103, and there will be 37 lifts instead of 21.

This expansion will redefine luxury and the guest-first ski experience. While the global ski community celebrates Deer Valley's legacy as a top ski destination, snowboarders will have to be content with the occasional rebellious protest of Deer Valley’s ski-only policy, which will extend into this new untouched terrain.
