The Northern Wasatch Parade of Homes is happening right now and we're celebrating one of last year's gems, a masterpiece built by Peterson Builders.
When Conservation Meets Innovation
Even with the scattering of mid-modern homes in South Ogden, Utah, a modern oasis might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of homes in this coveted area. It’s a delightful surprise then, to come upon this incredible property that has been four years in the making, surrounded by mature trees and a half-hidden garden and creek.
The owners of this home created the perfect mix of their passions for nature and conservation with innovation and the highest attention to detail. Architecture it would seem, really is a universal language, because while every decision was deeply personal to the owners, the materials and spaces will speak to anyone who steps through the front door.
The entrance serves as the heart of the home and its a peaceful place with natural light, featuring twin benches made by Utah artist Jim Jacobs. They mirror each other — one on the inside, the other on the outside, undulating between the glass wall in a playful trick of the eye. A compass pointing to magnetic true north was integrated into the floor during the home’s construction, acting as a time stamp and forever preserving that moment.
There are many personal touches like this that tell a story, creating a dialogue between the home and its visitors.
Beautiful Contradictions
Collections from the owners travels and works by local artists embellish the rooms in their custom niches and on the walls throughout the residence. These objects provide a warmth, a lived-in feeling that is juxtaposed with the cool, clean lines and industrial materials like concrete, stone, and steel.
The floor-to-ceiling windows that flood the home with serene natural light also contradict the exterior’s dark woods and brick that offer a dramatic backdrop to the carefully chosen low-water plantings.
You’d be hard-pressed to find a design choice that wasn’t thoughtfully considered and then expertly executed by Peterson Builders and the team that helped them dream up and bring to fruition this artful expression of form and function.
From the mechanical system that turns on a whole-house fan, to achieving one of Utah’s first in-floor cooling systems, the home was designed to be net zero. On the day that Mountain Luxury had the pleasure of touring this home, it was generating its own electricity.
