Summary

Kamas (pronounced kah-muss), Utah, is a small town in Summit County.  Located in an area of the Wasatch Back known as Kamas Valley, Kamas's nearest neighbors are Marion to the north and Francis to the south.  The first permanent settlers arrived in Kamas Valley in 1859.  This group of Mormon pioneers was led by Thomas Rhoade under the direction of Brigham Young, the leader of the LDS church at the time.  More and more settlers arrived as the years passed, and in 1871, an engineer was brought in to survey and divide the settlement.  Kamas was officially incorporated in July, 1911.  A fun fact about Kamas: The town derives its name from a Native American word for a perennial herb that's native to the area.

Kamas is considered the "Gateway to the Uintas" because of its easy access to the Uinta Mountains to the east. With just over 2,500 residents, Kamas a quiet and rural community.  Indeed, this small town is often used as a supply station for outdoor adventurists who pass through on their way to the innumerable camping, hunting, hiking, and horseback riding destinations in the Uinta Mountains.  Kamas is also known for its annual heritage celebration, Fiesta Days.  The first Fiesta Days celebration was held in 1938, and today, the event features a demolition derby, bull wars, a professional rodeo, vendors ,boutiques, pageants, and much more.  Fiesta Days usually coincides with the week of Utah's Pioneer Day. Away from it all but close enough to enjoy everything that the surrounding cities have to offer, Kamas is just a 45 minute drive to Salt Lake City and only 22 minutes from Park City.
