It is also the world headquarters of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, whose origins stretch back to 1847 when the city was founded by followers of the church. The first Mormon pioneers in the area numbered 148 with 143 men, three women, and two children. More emigrants flocked to Salt Lake City to avoid religious persecution and soon the town was thriving. Due to its proximity to the Great Salt Lake, it was named "The Great Salt Lake City" but the name was later changed to "Salt Lake City" in 1868
